Synopsis of "Horns and Wrinkles" by Joseph Helgerson
How can you tell if a river’s under a spell? River trolls, rock trolls, blue-wing fairies—the usual suspects. The stretch of the Mississippi where Claire lives has rumors of them all, not that she’s ever spotted any. But then Claire’s cousin Duke takes a swim and sprouts a horn—a long, pointy, handsome thing. After that, Claire doesn’t have much choice but to believe that something rivery is going on, especially since she’s the only one who can help Duke lose his new addition.
Synopsis of "100 Cupboards"
Staying with relatives in Kansas since his parents have been kidnapped in Colombia, Henry discovers 99 cupboard doors hidden behind the wall of his attic bedroom. Soon he and his cousin Henrietta realize that they are portals into other worlds. Behind one of the doors is an evil and powerful witch who has been imprisoned there for a very long time, and is eager to escape. And Henry also begins to learn of his own strange past, and that of his uncle and grandfather.
From the Book:
He sat up. A piece of plaster rolled down his forehead, bounced on the tip of his nose, and landed on his chest. He ran one hand through his hair, and more bits of his wall dropped onto his lap. He looked up.
Above him, two small knobs protruded from the plaster of his wall. One of the knobs was turning, very slightly. A small, scraping noise grew until a final thump rained fine plaster dust down on Henry and his bed.

Popular
Dear Diary,
I feel like the "populars" live off of people. Like a dinosaur lives off of other dinosaurs. Only the "populars" are more vicious. They can only survive if they are the center of attention. They stole everything dear to me. My personality, my self esteem. Even my best friend. She said that we would be friends forever. That she would never do what she turned and did do to me. She betrayed me, for them.
The walk to the football game that day was hard. She walked up the hill with me, and the "populars" walked in front of us. She said, "I think that I'm going to say hi to the 'populars'. Just to annoy them."
"OK." I replied. But she wasn't just going to say hi. I was left alone the whole football game. At half time I went to look for her. I found her. Sitting with them. She didn't see me. Thank God. I went into the bathroom and cried. I didn't know after that who she was anymore. Who I was. Was it something that I did? Am I too big of a dork to be her friend? She was friends with the people she said were snobs. Stuck up, conceded people. It started out with the clothes. Hey, I don't care if you go around strutting your soccer jackets and your basketball jersey. Who cares if your hangin' out with your possey of basketball heads. Not me! But I did care. She started to ply with them to. Sounds kiddish, but she told me herself that she hated basketball! But I ignored it. But the last straw came when I said hi to her in the hallway. After about 2 weeks of not talking.
"Hi." I said."How's it goin'? Is basketball fun?"
The next thing she said to me broke my heart.
"Hey, sorry, I forgot your name...is it Ellie?"
I said nothing. I didn't know who my real friends were anymore. I guess I was just another loser. Without friends.
